UCV & Theatre Validation

Are you sure your theatre validation is up-to-date?

Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 03-01 (which supersedes HTM 2025) covers heating and ventilation systems and specialised ventilation for healthcare premises.

It states that operating theatres need to be inspected annually to comply with some of the core requirements of HTM 03-01.

  • Do you know if your theatre is compliant?
  • Are you certain of what testing is required under the new legislation?
  • Would you like a clear, detailed report of your theatre?

Regular Testing of Theatre Ventilation

UCV validation engineerAs you'll know, ventilation systems in operating theatres are a major financial investment and should provide a clean environment. Testing always needs to be carried out on any new theatre, and after routine use, the only way to ensure that all parts of the ventilation system are working effectively is to undertake regular testing.

Regular testing ensures that any potential problems are identified quickly to prevent airborne infections and possible closure of theatre. A range of tests need to be carried out, such as:

  • Making sure the HEPA filter (high efficiency particulate air filter) is working correctly
  • Checking the speed of the air from the laminar hood at specific points
  • Ensuring there are enough air changes per hour
  • Counting the number of airborne particles present within the laminar curtain
  • Checking the difference in air pressure between the theatre and adjoining rooms
  • Measurement of biological contaminants in a conventionally ventilated theatre

Reduce Downtime in Theatre

  • But what if part of the ventilation system fails one or more of the tests?
  • How do you know what the problem is and what you need to do to correct it?
  • To reduce downtime, you need to deal with the issue as quickly as possible.

Some companies that offer testing just have a simple tick list of tests which have either passed or failed, but MET provides you with a clear, detailed report which pinpoints any faults, and shows recommendations on what action to take.

UCV/Laminar Flow/HEPA Filter Theatres

service engineerMET Healthcare engineers complete the following in UCV theatres as part of HTM 03-01 compliance, and produce a clear and detailed report:

  • Filter integrity test
  • Theatre velocity test (also known as map test)
  • Air exchange rates measurement
  • Particle penetration test (also known as entrainment test or turbulence test)
  • Air pressure differentials test
  • Airborne particle counting
  • Noise level test
  • Check for defects to fabric of theatre

Conventionally Ventilated Theatres

MET Healthcare engineers complete the following in conventionally ventilated theatres and produce a clear and detailed report:

  • Air exchange rates measurement
  • Bio-burden test (also known as microbiological sampling)
  • Air pressure differentials test
  • If required, airborne particle counting
  • Filter efficiency test
  • Noise level test
  • Check for defects to fabric of theatre

N.B. There is currently no legal requirement to annually test conventionally ventilated theatres (though they must be tested when commissioned). However, as independent specialists in the hospital environment, MET strongly suggest bio-burden testing on an annual basis as part of good infection control practice.
